There’s plenty to fill your days with while hanging out at the cabin. We’ve pulled together a non-exhaustive list of cool things to do within one hour of our cabin. All tried and tested by yours truly.
St Marys (2 min)
A short 10 min walk to a waterfall lookout (waterfall only runs after rain) in the reserve which borders our block. The trailhead is a common spot for locals to dump their unwanted roosters so you might encounter some on the walk!
A drive up to the tallest point in the area, great views up the Fingal Valley and east coast. 4WD track to the top.
The iconic pyramid shaped mountain which towers over St Marys. It’s a steep 45min walk up but the views up and down the coast are well worth it on a clear day!
Bay of Fires (30 mins north)
The whole region was named Australia’s best beach for 2025, and Binalong Bay is the main beach in the Bay of Fires and offers crystal clear water for swimming.
The peninsula has lots of hidden beaches and huge sand dunes to explore. The water has to be seen to be believed it’s in Tassie!
The end of the road that runs along the Bay of Fires, stop for beaches filled with the iconic orange rocks.
Pyengana (1 hour north west)
It’s a pub, in a paddock. Featuring a beer drinking pig!
Great cheddar cheese dairy- shop has lots of different aged cheese to try and you can watch the cheese making from a window into the factory. The cafe on site offers good cheese boards and a nice view of the farm.
Bicheno (40 mins south)
Great sheltered swimming beach with hot water showers at the surf club. Grab some fish n chips from down the road to seal off the swim.
Watch seals and gulls from the beach of the lobster shack over a plate of fresh seafood and a bottle of bubbles.
Ok so it wasn’t pumping when we visited but this is a great spot to spot little blue penguins if you come at night. Just down he road from the Lobster Shack.
Stunningly clear water and if you’re up for it you can do a 2-3 hour walk to the gorge and back before you jump in!
Freycinet (1 hour south)
This is a steep climb (and at points clamber) over granite faces but the view from the top is worth it. Walk takes about an hour each way and should only be attempted on a clear day. The rocks can get slippery and honestly without that view at the top, not worth it.
View from the top of Mt Amos. There is a 2 night circuit walk to the bay which we will definitely be back for.
This beach is just behind the visitors centre and has a great view of the aptly named Hazards. Great spot to relax if you just have an afternoon.
That’s just a snapshot of what the north east of Tassie has to offer all within an hour of the little cabin in St Marys. There’s still more for us to explore (including Ben Lomand which we hope to visit in the next couple of weeks) so we will post more updates as we try more spots.
If you are planning a trip to Tasmania soon, I have more recommendations (including place to eat and drink) on my google maps guide here: Netta's Tassie to do's
